A Time to Reap, The Next 1000 Miles, Upcoming

January Wrap-up

Coming up on the end to the first month of the 2018 season and I can’t even remember the last time I wrote in here. As a writer, this makes me look piss-poor… But, hey, I put the pro in procrastination!

One thing that made me want to get a post out was a message I received from a young man the other day. In it, he let me know how he has loved the trilogy I wrote and how powerful it was for him. He even goes on to tell me that I’m one of his favorite authors. Now, I have to admit these are the things that keep me going, call it writer’s adrenaline. And as an Indie writer, who does as little marketing as I have, I don’t get to experience the reader’s reactions or interpretations of my works. Generally, that only happens when its either bad or I beg. This young man went out of his way to make my day if not week by just telling me he read my books. Expounding on the way he enjoyed them almost made me feel unworthy to a point, but filled my heart with such joy that I hope the next book will keep me in his favorite author category. Thanks, dude. You rock.

Okay so, brief run down on what’s going on thus far:

  • Finishing up a stand alone horror book under the working title of American Red. Rough chapters are available on WattPad if you are daring enough to give it a try. CLICK HERE
  • Audiobook for A Time to Reap is underway. It is surreal to hear my thoughts and words come out of a narrator’s mouth, but it’s so exciting, I can’t wait to share it with everyone this Spring.
  • Digital Box Set of The Legend of Carter Gabel is being proposed. That way, Kindle lovers can get all three for one low price and never have to skip a beat. This may be coming out as early as March for those interested. Might also branch this out to Nook, iTunes and wherever is prevalent.
  • Podcast… yes, that’s right. I will have a podcast coming out soon with my wonderful co-host Kate M. Colby. We’ll be discussing a sci-fi or fantasy book over a drink, we’ll have a book group on Goodreads and all the social media things. Stay tuned for more!!

Anywho, that should about cover the fun things. If you think of something you want to ask, let me know. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Keep reading, writing and reviewing!!

A Time to Die, The Next 1000 Miles, Upcoming

Save Up Your Pennies!

Good afternoon, let’s jump right into it!

Next Friday, A Time to Die will be going to the editor. From there, it shouldn’t take longer than a couple of weeks before I have my final draft back. From that point, it’ll jump right into the lap of a formatting artist and finally, a revised full cover piece from my cover artist to wrap it all up.

What’s that mean for you?

Well, if all goes according to plan, there will be a final installment of the Legend of Carter Gabel series in your hands in less than a month!!

I will of course keep you more up to date as the weeks progress along this last slide into home base. But, as we know, occasional downfalls occur. And with them, things could get hinky.

Hinky = Effed Up, without making grandmothers cringe.

What will happen from there? I can only hope good things. I have a lot of pots on the stove cooking, in terms of new reading. I need everyone’s help in making sure I can serve them up though. If I go Indie, that’ll be a long time to wait at the pace I’ve set. But, the more and more people’s hands my book gets into, the better chance I have of delivering stories.

Sooooooo, share your thoughts out there with a review if you haven’t already! Or tell a friend looking for a good book. Or if you didn’t like it, donate your copy to a teen group like Boys Club or Girls Inc or your local library.

Indies thrive off of word of mouth and if we get enough help, you can be one of those people saying, I knew him when… I remember chatting with him once…. or I actually got to meet them before the movie ever got made! How cool will you be?

Sorry, no one’s as cool as BW

Blog Tour with Zach Chopchinski

Over the weekend, I was able to sit down with a great friend and fellow Indie author of mine, Zach Chopchinski. He is setting up to re-release his first novel, The Curious Tale of Gabriel, on March 25th. Take a few minutes and listen along to see a smidge of our hi-jinx.

Author Bio:

Zachary is 27 and lives in Florida with his lovely wife, Layla. The two of them share a home with their four fur-children.

Zachary has degrees in Criminal Justice and Criminology. He had two short stories and a poem published by Ohio State University. Zachary has always had two passions in his life, criminal justice and writing. After spending nearly 5 years working in security, he decided it was time to give his other passion a chance.

Zachary is very much a family man and when he is not deep in writing, he can be found spending time with his family, playing video games or contemplating his next story idea.

October Rewind

It’s that time to look back and see just how well I’ve done in the month of October. This month, I found that audiobooks are a new obsession in case the stats don’t tell you first. Click on any of the pics to check them out on Amazon! Must say, Illuminae was great and The Cogsmith’s Daughter was a refreshing treat. Can’t wait for both the sequels there. Additionally, A Time to Reap has a GIVEAWAY <– Click it! That being that, I’m participating in NaNoWriMo this month. Something needs to jumpstart my brain and what better than an event? I’ll be working on 1 of 3 titles, just depending what speaks to me most. Feel free to befriend me out there, I’ll be under Jonas Lee.

YOUTUBE

YouTube is in a timeout. Mainly, my Cross Country Nerd firend has had some complications with her computer and I’ve been investing that space into reading and such. I’m not certain the YouTube thing for CCN will return. Mainly, we are starting to contemplate a Podcast instead. Since programs run an hour, it’s a lot to think people will invest that much sit-down time. So, if/when that does happen, we’ll be kicking it off in 2016. We’ll still have our FB page and tweeting about Star Wars and anything else you can think up.

I’m still giving thought to doing an author YouTube. Interviews are in the same time constraints for viewing, so I’ll be working on a script to get something helpful out there.

A Time to Live, A Time to Reap, Conventions, The Next 1000 Miles

Fair Enough… (pun intended)

I’ve had exactly two moments of interacting with book-goers while being an author. One was at my own signing at a local coffee house. The other was at the South Dakota Book Festival a couple of weeks ago. When I thought of it, initially, I was more than a little nervous. As far as extroverted people go, I am not one that falls delicately into that category. In a typical setting, I’ll be the one listening to your conversation, taking in the scene, contemplating what I want to watch on Netflix when I get home and into my comfy pants.

In situations like the book festival though, I turn off that annoying chatter and focus on the people there. I love readers and if I could, I’d talk to all of them that walked by my table. I certainly tried (staying cautiously cool and not pouncing like a car salesman) and in most cases succeeded. Look at me all relaxed…

blog_exhibit-hall

…despite all the red arrows and squigglies surrounding me.

A few things I took away from the experience (much in thanks to my wife’s help):

  • People love free candy, hell, free anything. Whatever draws their attention to take another second before passing you. If they pause enough to look at your book cover(s), they might pick it up and read the back or better yet, ask you what your book is about.
  • Table decor helps draw attention from further away.
  • Giveaways are a great method to getting people to stop, although – this can backfire if people would rather wait to see if they win instead of buying it right then & there. But if they’re half on the fence anyhow…
  • Have a good two-sentence synopsis of your book. (I think I was asked 40 times what my book was about and another 40 asking who is Carter Gabel)
    • Have short, concise answers to some major questions about your book(s) like – genre, suitable ages, similar books, pertinent info
  • Shwag is good. Falls under the free category, but if you have bookmarks, put your social media info on there and possibly a list of your works

I met some great people at the Book Festival. Four new author friends and an editor. Given how small of a venue I was at, I was happy to know there was another RC author in my similar Indie World! I listed some of my take-homes from my new author friends who (coincidentally) I’ll get to see at Utopia in Nashville this June! Click on a pic to learn more!

September Rewind

It’s that time to look back and see just how well I’ve done in the month of September. I did take part in the South Dakota Book Festival this last week, but I will have a separate post to go over what it was like my first time! Beyond that, I’ve been working on getting my third and final installment in the Carter Gabel series. I think my motivation for completing it has dwindled only because when it’s done, it’s doomed to sit for awhile. But, I’m also working on a secret project I’m sure people will be interested in seeing come to fruition.

Interview with KT Munson

This last weekend, I was fortunate enough to sit down with Katherine (KT) Munson. She is the author of adventure / fantasy novels and truly a wonderful person. We talk about the nature of getting out there as an Indie, the roads of advice we learn from mistakes and Alaska. Google or the Internet has a vendetta against me it seems because around the 27th minute it takes my internet away. But, we have some great convo beforehand, so please come and check us out!

Then go and look at her newest work:

Interview with CL Coffey

I was able to have a short interview with one of my favorite Indie authors, CL Coffey. Discussing her premise in Louisiana, her inspiration for the story and the angels within. Unfortunately the internet hates me and decided to punish my interview by taking CL away from me. But the interview was fun and you can see me struggling to swim for the last 30 seconds. In the meantime, go check out her works, links are in the graphics below.

Then go and look at her UPCOMING sequel:

A Time to Reap, Conventions, Upcoming, YouTube

Happy Birthday, Jeffrey!!

My very first novel, A Time to Reap, turns one-year old today! In the words of Carter Gabel, “Crapdamnit!” That went by super fast. In a single year, I’ve learned more about writing, publishing and turning out a novel on my own than I ever thought I wanted. Along the way, I also made some kick ass friends, interacted with dozens of other Indie writers and focused on some long term goals to get me to places I want to be.

What’s on the horizon? Well, I have a final novel I am working furiously on trying to crank out. Then I have my very first book convention. It’s one held for our entire state and takes place September 25-27. Anyone within a reasonable driving distance should most certainly go up to Deadwood and come find me!!

Beyond that, I have plans on attending UtopYA 2016 in Nashville, TN next June where I hope to meet some of my most awesome friends and actually share some time face to face.

What else? Well, I do have a fantastic, albeit not author related, series I am taking part in. Cross Country Nerds premiered last night. It’s an hour long commiseration about nerdy topics and all the things we love. My budding friend, Liz Tailor is hosting it on her YouTube channel, I have a playlist (LINKED HERE) where you can come over and subscribe to me so you can follow up or ask questions. It’s a live show, so come over and get a little cred for your questions!

And if you want to save a step, the video is below… but please SUBSCRIBE. I’d like to hit 50 subscribers before the end of the year. Now, go celebrate my book’s birthday and buy a copy to have for your very own. Jeffrey loves seeing his brothers and sisters out there in good homes!! BUY A JEFFREY
