Cover Revealings?

The time is coming when my final book is almost ready to depart on the last leg of its journey to the editors. March 24th is the special day. You know what that means? COVER REVEAL….

Except, not yet…

I’d like some help from anyone willing to coordinate a reveal with me through their blog, site, social media, what-have-you. Any takers: JL.Fiction@outlook.com I’d like to do it on March 27th, two weeks from today. If you don’t volunteer, I’ll have to track you down individually.

In other news, I met up with my alpha reader (my dad) last week and talked out some of the things needing work on this last installment. Some very helpful ideas springing me from a stale point and into an ending I’m pretty happy with.

This is a helpful side-kick into a comfortable tower of praise.

Ultimately, I am very happy to be done with a series. I never knew how difficult ending one could be and this is a moment where I realized writing by the seat of my pants would be a lot easier if I’d just planned and plotted out some major points along the way. Live and learn, right?

Anywho, I hope everyone is having a great Monday, don’t let it do this to you:

Fight back and let’s find our way to Friday!

2 Minutes

Two Minutes (3.10)

I have heard something this past week and it applies to everyone, not just authors. Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) or Fear of Missing Something (FMS) is one of those things we can all feel at times. For me, I feel I’m writing an idea that’s already been done before or the genre craze it’s in will pass. For others it might be the rush to finish a project, advance quickly in your career, get skinny quick, etc.

FOMO is something that can influence us all at some point or another, but really it just increases a sense of anxiety we can do without. Ever had someone utter the phrase, “just breathe”? Well, no shit, right? Otherwise I’d die.

It really should be something like: take a deep breath, hold it until you think you’re going to be uncomfortable, then a little longer. Wait for it… and when your chest starts to hurt, try to remember what was so important? When you breathe in again, isn’t it the best? One: you’re not dead, hooray! Two: it’s an exercise reminding you how the everyday, no-thought-required things don’t mean a lot until you take away the effort of just letting them happen. I could have used blinking instead but what fun is that compared to suffocation, right?

FOMO is a lot like having a suffocation feeling all the time. Do you want that in your life? Me either! Point is, just breathe normally and relax. Life is going to happen whether you force it or simply let it happen.

I picked up the notion of this topic from a great podcast called Petal to the Metal. Feel free to check them out and let them know I sent you! (It will confuse the shit out of them)

The End of the Beginning

Sorry about Monday, everyone. I tried to hold it off, but it was just too powerful for me to stop.

But hey, with Monday’s, I’ll be bringing you updated posts on book progress, upcoming events, and all the little things in between. As some of you may know by now, the last installment in the Legend of Carter Gabel series is in the primping stages.

Which is basically a whole lot of reading and annoyance at my own levels of thought and continuity. It’s a lot like this:

Then… once I’ve polished it up as best as I can and get it to a decent level of reading I will turn it over to the professional editors. The pain and horror will be intense and humiliating, I’m sure. Like so…

Afterwards, I’ll have the final installment of my first series. It will mark the end of the first leg in my journey towards becoming a full time writer, at least that’s the dream.

With all of that, I will be wanting some help from any fans and friends interested in an ARC with the intention of posting reviews and promoting for me on release day. I’ve got about 5 who committed in the past, but I think 10 is a nice number to have, so if anyone is interested, please let me know so I can add you to the list.

To anyone and everyone; thank you for reading this, liking anything I’ve posted and being close by me on this initial plunge into something I love doing. I hope to see you close by as I start out on the second leg of this wonderful journey.

2 Minutes

Two Minutes (3.3)

I know how pressed for time we all can be, and I say that very loosely. I’m as guilty as you are, “I don’t have time to …” and you can fill in the blank. How many minutes of the day do I spend aimlessly wandering the digital world liking posts I don’t read all the way through, skipping good content in lieu of a photo, or skipping a photo because of a video? Answer: probably too many. We all do it, hell, I’m willing to bet 85% of the people who saw this post skipped it. Want to prove me wrong? Go ahead and leave the comment “PINEAPPLE” below. Let’s see how I do?

Point is, I came across a video with Eric Thomas (see my admitting contradiction above) and in it he talks about not believing in the word procrastination. Now, the writer side of my mind immediately wants to contradict this, but as he goes on he explains how it’s not that we put things off, it’s that they don’t hold meaning to us. We lack motivation to do things if they aren’t a priority to us.

I’ve got to admit, he’s damn right. I have been “procrastinating” certain aspects of writing and publishing because of my own fear, doubt, reluctance and laziness. And if we’re doing things for anyone else’s sake, then we’re taking away OUR meaning for THEIRS. Now, we can all be respectful of others, but when we truly want something there’s a way to get it done without sacrificing somebody else’s time/money/sanity in the process.

The trick is telling ourselves and then just doing it. Not much of a secret or a surprise. And as much as I’d be willing to drag this on for pages upon pages, that’s the root of the root and the bud of the bud. Plus, I’ll be doing these little insights every Friday. They’ll only last 2 minutes of your day, hence the title. Maybe one day, with enough interest, I’ll simply do a video for this length, but first I want to see if you’d be willing to earn it 😉

And our two minutes is over.

Journey of 1000 Miles

New Release

One of my good friends has officially raced me to publishing three books and he has beat me in releasing now. Take a moment or two to look over his new cover and check into him on social media.

Zach is a character and one of the nicest guys I’ve met on my journey. I’m glad to call him my friend. All his info is below:

Book Synopsis:

The widowed wife of a North Carolina plantation owner, Gabrielle awakens in this life with a broken heart and a sharpened spirit. Living in one of the darkest times in American history, she finds herself running a safe house for the underground railroad during the American Civil War. In order to save a life, Gabrielle must make a sacrifice that could damn her host for eternity.

Everything’s different this time. The rules have changed, Morrigan has changed, and Arawn is more dangerous than ever. He has sent a hunter after Gabrielle and she has to use every ounce of her new powers if she is going to survive.

Author Bio:

Zach is a bow tie wearing, formal vest rocking, pocket watch using, sarcastic monster of a writer. Currently residing in Orlando, Florida, he spends his days working, writing and procrastinating.

Zach is the author of the Gabrielle series, a young adult fantasy with a paranormal-historical-time traveling twist (try saying that five times fast).

Zach has multiple college degrees, in the fields of criminal justice and criminology…because he wanted to catch ALL the bad guys. Now, coupled with being an author of young adult fiction he spends his days yelling at people for breaking regulatory laws.

The Next 1000 Miles

It’s Been Awhile…

Mostly, we all have a calling. Something deep within or sometimes beckoning is from afar to do something that will make us complete. For anyone reading this, I hope you’re already there doing it or in the process of reaching it.

For me, I’m still on my way. I got a late start in life toward my passion of writing, but all of our journeys give us perspective. My calling doesn’t pay the bills, hell it barely pays “a” bill sometimes. I put more in than I have gotten out and because of that it’s really more of a hobby. Those are those money burning projects that Pinterest lures you in with.

That said, tiny moments make it so worthwhile, which is why I decided to write this post. At my part time job the other day, a woman was in line and out of the blue asked how my third book was coming. I was shocked on a couple of levels because even though she looked vaguely familiar, I know we weren’t related. She ended up being in the audience at a teacher convention I spoke at months ago. We chatted as I rang her up and she mentioned how her daughter enjoyed the books as well.

A few patrons go by (I work this PT in retail and have a profound soft spot for any of us during the holidays now), there’s a slight parting in the line and some sighs. Then, in front of me (with direction from her mom) the little girl was at my register. She thanked me for writing it and told me how she enjoyed the books, I shook her hand and they were off.

What they left behind was the best part of my day. A glowing sense that my words and thoughts touched someone enough to brave cutting in line during the holidays, to acknowledge me when I can sometimes feel invisible and to make my hobby feel like a goal in training.

We all have something we know we were meant to do. Never lose sight of it just because it doesn’t make money. If you want something bad enough, there will come a way.

Merry Christmas if I don’t write before then! And let me know some of your moments like mine, I can’t be the only one.

How I Started NaNoWriMo in the Negative

It’s National Novel Writer’s Month! Time to put thoughts down and hammer out the majority or entirety of a novel, right?

Well, I am doing just that. I am at the halfway mark in the last book of my trilogy and I have a short story due and what better month to tackle this adventure than November? I think anytime you can get a goal and a timeline, it sponsors the movement toward completion faster than some internal mechanism saying otherwise.

So, I was amping up and getting somewhere last night in my story. The words were flowing and then this Microsoft Word Update popped up on top. So, I saved my work, clicked the button and then some sort of pixie magic happened and all but what I wrote was gone. 40K + words *(poof)*

I did what most people would do:

And when I Google searched everything else that I didn’t already know and the work was gone…

But, I was able to restore a previous version … from October 20th….

Well… what can you do? After sleeping on it, the best thing I can say is don’t trust Updates. Save your work constantly. And look at the bright side in catastrophes. I mean, I disliked losing close to 3500 words, yes. It does give me a chance to embrace the thoughts and direction I was going in and reshape it, hopefully better this time.

So, Day 1: – 3500 Word Count. Let’s try Day 2?

How’s everyone else coping? Hitting daily goals? Pooling up for weekend writing?

A Time to Reap, YouTube

A Time to Read…

The pun in the title is on purpose. I’m not slacking at proofreading just yet. I was able to sit down with L.R.W. Lee and participate in her YouTube channel, Book Nerd Paradise. She has new and experienced authors alike give a brief synopsis of our book, tell one of our favorite quotes and pose a trivia question.

Did I also mention I read a portion of my book, A Time to Reap?

Did I also mention I’m giving away two free copies of said book? Just for commenting on the video, you can have a chance at winning!

I spent the past few months combing back through and perfecting the first and second books in the series. It wasn’t because I didn’t love the original, I just wasn’t satisfied with a lot of the open ended portions and inconsistencies I had in my own brain. So, it’s back and better than before! If you have a Kindle copy and haven’t tried it out yet, please go update and I hope to hear from you!

The Next 1000 Miles, Upcoming

Back From Hibernation

So, it’s been months since I posted. I’d like to say I was backpacking or researching or been hammering out novels one after another. No, I’ve just been living life and getting caught up with it at every turn. And who wakes up and stretches their arms out all refreshed?! I’m more like this kid:

cranky-early-morning1

For those of you not familiar with me, I write the Legend of Carter Gabel series. It’s a time-travel YA Sci-Fi novel about a kid who can spontaneously travel back in time but soon finds out that those aren’t his only gifts. I have the first two books out right now <shameless plugs at the bottom>. AND I’m still working on the third. BUT I totally plan on having it cranked out by the fall.

What’s Been Going On?

I have spent the last few months combing back through my books, taking out the unnecessary and shaping up the structure a bit. Overall, I love this story even more now and those I taxed with re-reading it agree it flows so much better.

I have been cranking up the world generator for my next series and even a couple more singular ideas in the wings. I fully plan on starting the writing process as soon as I get Carter out and in the hands of my editor.

On top of that, I’ve helped out a few writer friends with their own work.

What’s Going On Now?

Currently, I help coach a U14 softball team and the season is just wrapping up (Go Adrenaline!). Those twelve young ladies have a lot of my free time and they’re totally worth it. Check out my Instagram at the bottom.

I am looking forward to a YouTube video that will be coming out on Tuesday. I guest appear on the 69th episode of Book Nerd Paradise where I got to read a little bit of my work and there will even be a giveaway for a free copy or two just by commenting! Go check her out and watch for me this next week.

What’s Coming Up?

Soon, I will be diving further into the realm of Carter Gabel and with the end of the series, I will be taxing a few people to help me decide on the ending. #betareaders

I’m on WattPad!! I plan on posting little snipits and stories for the Carter Gabel series and the new one coming out soon. Come join me so I can follow you and your own journey!

Can you say Cross Country Nerds…? Stay tuned!

Blog Tour with Zach Chopchinski

Over the weekend, I was able to sit down with a great friend and fellow Indie author of mine, Zach Chopchinski. He is setting up to re-release his first novel, The Curious Tale of Gabriel, on March 25th. Take a few minutes and listen along to see a smidge of our hi-jinx.

Author Bio:

Zachary is 27 and lives in Florida with his lovely wife, Layla. The two of them share a home with their four fur-children.

Zachary has degrees in Criminal Justice and Criminology. He had two short stories and a poem published by Ohio State University. Zachary has always had two passions in his life, criminal justice and writing. After spending nearly 5 years working in security, he decided it was time to give his other passion a chance.

Zachary is very much a family man and when he is not deep in writing, he can be found spending time with his family, playing video games or contemplating his next story idea.
