The Next 1000 Miles, Upcoming

Well, I must say, 2015 was quite a year. Released a book in the first month, coached softball (a lot), participated in my first signing event, went to my first book fair… THEN, I became totally immersed in trying to figure out what I need to do.

I’m sure each and every author taking the Indie path or working on their traditional roots can attest to many of the same notions. Writing isn’t quite that difficult, but putting a story together sure can be.

By putting a story together, I am stating the initial ideas, the writing itself, the editing, the blurbs, the pitches, the fans, the social media, the sales, the promoting and then gearing up to do it all over again.

What I did in 2015 was over reach my arms before I knew what I was grabbing at. I took on a lot without direction and kept my eyes on the horizon more than the ground before me. So, the good thing about a new year is the preconceived notion of a new beginning!

So, in 2016, the site has a new look. I’m combing through my previous books to release the best one yet. I’m setting up a mail subscription through Mail Chimp in order to streamline bonus content and everything else to my fans. Please subscribe to be a fan! I have 0 at this moment.

Beyond that, I plan on keeping you informed on writing ideas through the blog and minimizing promises of what’s to come until I can see them. BUT, there are many things I have on my plate I hope to start letting you all know about soon!!

October Rewind

It’s that time to look back and see just how well I’ve done in the month of October. This month, I found that audiobooks are a new obsession in case the stats don’t tell you first. Click on any of the pics to check them out on Amazon! Must say, Illuminae was great and The Cogsmith’s Daughter was a refreshing treat. Can’t wait for both the sequels there. Additionally, A Time to Reap has a GIVEAWAY <– Click it! That being that, I’m participating in NaNoWriMo this month. Something needs to jumpstart my brain and what better than an event? YouTube is in a timeout. Mainly, my Cross Country Nerd firend has had some complications with her computer and I’ve been investing that space into reading and such. I’m not certain the YouTube thing for CCN will return. Mainly, we are starting to contemplate a Podcast instead. Since programs run an hour, it’s a lot to think people will invest that much sit-down time. So, if/when that does happen, we’ll be kicking it off in 2016. We’ll still have our FB page and tweeting about Star Wars and anything else you can think up.

I’m still giving thought to doing an author YouTube. Interviews are in the same time constraints for viewing, so I’ll be working on a script to get something helpful out there.

A big thanks to Lindsay for taking the time to read AND review my sequel!

History and Mystery

A Time to Live

by Jonas Lee

Carter Gabel had to overcome a lot in the last year, and time travel as a side effect of his “genetic disease” was only the beginning. He’s lost his mother, reunited with his estranged father, crippled a city and destroyed his school. If he thought he could fade into the sunset, Carter has another thing coming.

A terrorist group known as Pirates has infiltrated his hometown to overthrow the Program designed to monitor those with potentially harmful abilities. Carter is a teenager, but he’s forced back into the mix as his grandson, David, has been put into a coma. He will have to try and stay out of sight as much as possible and work with new Eventuals along the way in order to stop the Pirates from turning Lincoln Square into a ghost town.

First I have to let y’all know that…

The Evolution of The Cogsmith’s Daughter: From First Draft to Final Product

For all those writers looking to be authors, give this a look and see how a little determination can give you what you want.

Fair Enough… (pun intended)

I’ve had exactly two moments of interacting with book-goers while being an author. One was at my own signing at a local coffee house. The other was at the South Dakota Book Festival a couple of weeks ago. When I thought of it, initially, I was more than a little nervous. As far as extroverted people go, I am not one that falls delicately into that category. In a typical setting, I’ll be the one listening to your conversation, taking in the scene, contemplating what I want to watch on Netflix when I get home and into my comfy pants.

In situations like the book festival though, I turn off that annoying chatter and focus on the people there. I love readers and if I could, I’d talk to all of them that walked by my table. I certainly tried (staying cautiously cool and not pouncing like a car salesman) and in most cases succeeded. Look at me all relaxed…

…despite all the red arrows and squigglies surrounding me.

A few things I took away from the experience (much in thanks to my wife’s help):

  • People love free candy, hell, free anything. Whatever draws their attention to take another second before passing you. If they pause enough to look at your book cover(s), they might pick it up and read the back or better yet, ask you what your book is about.
  • Table decor helps draw attention from further away.
  • Giveaways are a great method to getting people to stop, although – this can backfire if people would rather wait to see if they win instead of buying it right then & there. But if they’re half on the fence anyhow…
  • Have a good two-sentence synopsis of your book. (I think I was asked 40 times what my book was about and another 40 asking who is Carter Gabel)
    • Have short, concise answers to some major questions about your book(s) like – genre, suitable ages, similar books, pertinent info
  • Shwag is good. Falls under the free category, but if you have bookmarks, put your social media info on there and possibly a list of your works

I met some great people at the Book Festival. Four new author friends and an editor. Given how small of a venue I was at, I was happy to know there was another RC author in my similar Indie World! I listed some of my take-homes from my new author friends who (coincidentally) I’ll get to see at Utopia in Nashville this June! Click on a pic to learn more!

September Rewind

It’s that time to look back and see just how well I’ve done in the month of September. I did take part in the South Dakota Book Festival this last week, but I will have a separate post to go over what it was like my first time! Beyond that, I’ve been working on getting my third and final installment in the Carter Gabel series. I think my motivation for completing it has dwindled only because when it’s done, it’s doomed to sit for awhile. But, I’m also working on a secret project I’m sure people will be interested in seeing come to fruition.

The Cogsmith’s Daughter (Desertera #1) Cover Reveal

A friend of mine is approaching the birth of her first book baby. This is as close to a gender surprise most authors will experience, BUT cover reveals are sacred and I am glad to be a part of it! Please go have a look and let her know how many copies you plan on purchasing.

Author Kate M. Colby is thrilled to reveal the cover for her debut novel, The Cogsmith’s Daughter (Desertera #1). Add the novel to your “to-read” list on Goodreads today, and check back on Kate’s website,, for more exciting news later this week!

Daughter -C2

Two-hundred years ago, the steam-powered world experienced an apocalyptic flood. When the waters dried up, the survivors settled around their steamship in a wasteland they named Desertera. Believing the flood and drought were caused by a scorned goddess, the monarchs demanded execution for anyone who commits the unforgivable sin—adultery.

Today, King Archon entraps his wives in the crime of adultery, executing each boring bride to pursue his next infatuation. Most nobles overlook King Archon’s behavior, but when Lord Varick’s daughter falls victim to the king’s schemes, he vows revenge.

When Aya Cogsmith is thirteen, King Archon has her father executed for treason. Orphaned and forced to turn to prostitution for survival, Aya dreams of avenging her father’s death. When Lord Varick approaches Aya with plans for vengeance, she agrees to play the king’s seductress—even though it puts her at risk for execution.

Packed with high-society intrigue, dappled with seduction, and driven by revenge, The Cogsmith’s Daughter is a steampunk dystopian novel with the perfect mixture of conspiracy and romance.
